The Salty Meal
Rashida, the raven, was a very tricky bird that lived in Tanzania, a country located in the southern half of Africa. Each day he distracted the animals of the grassy plains into giving up their prey.
Soaking wet and flapping his wings furiously, Rashida said, “There is a great storm over the cliff.” His voice was low and serious.
Hada Hyena lifted his nose from the antelope carcass and sniffed the air. “It does not smell of rain, my friend,” he replied. “Do you not see the water that drips from my wings? You must seek shelter right away.” Rashida’s beady eyes glistened as he stared at Hada’s meal. “Was that thunder?”
With that Rashida quickly flew away, causing Hada to wonder if he too should find a safe and dry place to wait out the weather. He sighed as he had not yet eaten his fill. He decided to seek shelter. Soon, he was fast asleep. The sun rose higher and higher above the African wilderness. When Hada woke hours later, he found nothing but bones in the place of his lunch.
“You tricked me!” he cried as a pudgy and happy Rashida flew overhead.
Day after day, Rashida devised a new trick to steal Hada’s food. The poor and hungry hyena grew tired of the game. “I must find a way to teach that tricky bird a lesson.” he thought. Soon, an unsuspecting treat wandered into his path, and he easily caught the meager prey. Rather than eating the meal, he chose instead to soak it in the briny waters of the Indian Ocean for several days, then placed it on the path where he had first met the raven.
Before long, Rashida was hanging about. read next
