The Harm in Trying
Devon and Jude were best friends; they did everything together. Though Jude was a stronger swimmer, they were both popular members of their school's swim team. Today they were walking through the Spring Carnival held at Coolidge Middle School.
"Look, there's Monica," Devon said, giving Jude a quick elbow thrust to the ribs. "I know you have a huge crush on her."
"Shhh! She's coming over," Jude warned, feeling his cheeks grow hot.
"Hi guys," Monica said sweetly, looking only at Jude's crystal blue eyes. "I sure would like to ride the Ferris wheel later, but I think it may be too scary alone." She turned her head slightly to one side and batted her long eyelashes.
Jude felt Devon's elbow again, then stammered. "I…I could go on it with you. I just have to meet up with my brother Brian. He has my tickets."
Monica beamed a bright smile at him, showing beautiful white teeth. She brushed a blonde strand from her face and said, "Okay, meet me in half an hour by the lemonade stand."
Jude could only nod and stare after her as she skipped away. His heart felt as if it had permanently moved into his throat.
"Dude, you have a serious crush." Devon laughed. Looking down, he asked, "Hey, do you see that?"
Jude was in a daze. "Huh?"
"It's a cigarette!" Devon reached down and plucked it from the grass. "We should try it."
"Are you crazy, Devon? Throw that back down before we get in trouble. Those things cause cancer, you know."
Devon shrugged. "Yeah, sure, if you smoke like a million of them, dude." He fished in his pocket and pulled out the matches he had swiped to light firecrackers. "What's the harm in trying just one?"
