Calvin was eager for his birthday party. Not for the usual reasons. The cake and ice cream were always fantastic, and everyone loves to get presents. Instead, Calvin was most eager to see his grandfather, who lived in Dayton and did not get a chance to fly down to visit often.
"He's here!" he shouted as he bounded toward the door.
"Who are you?" his grandpa John yelled. "Surely you are not our little Calvin. He's only about this tall." John held his hand out just above his waist.
Calvin laughed and hugged his grandfather. "I'm turning eleven tomorrow."
Grandpa John hung his long tweed coat in the front hallway and handed his grandson a long, slender package. Calvin's eyes glistened as he imagined what it could be. Calvin was old enough for a BB gun, or maybe it was his first paintball set. He tore open the blue wrap, but his hopes were soon dashed. Grandpa John still thought of him as a little boy. Calvin could not hide his disappointment in the gift; an electric train set.
Grandpa John did not seem at all offended by the reaction. "Don't you like it?" he asked.
Calvin struggled for the right words. If he could not say something nice, he should say nothing at all. At least, that is what his mother always told him. However, Calvin didn't figure his mom ever got a child's toy for her birthday. "It's not a bad train, really, but honestly, Grandpa, I am just a little too old to play with toys." He cringed, thinking he had surely hurt his grandfather's feelings.
Grandpa John only smiled. "Oh, are you now, hmmm. I may have to bore you with one of my stories to prove a boy is never too old to play."
Calvin loved his grandfather's boyhood tales. He sat up straight with anticipation. read next
