Wish Away the Rain
Martin sat staring at the torrential rain outside the window. He had not been outdoors in nearly a month. It was April in Iowa, and Martin did not like it one bit. "When is it ever going to stop?” he whined.
"Well, I hope it keeps up for at least another week." Jason, his father replied. "Our rainfall totals are still low for the year. We just got the soybeans in the ground so we can use all the moisture we can get."
"But I am tired of video games and television on the weekend. I want to play baseball, ride the horses and go hiking in the woods."
Jason clapped his son on the shoulder lightly. "You will do all of those things in due time, my boy."
Martin was only seven years old and had not developed much patience. "I want to go outside now. I don't see why we need all this water, anyway. Isn't that what irrigation is for? Why do we need the rain?"
"You know Marty, there is only a certain amount of water on the earth. We are dependent on the water cycle for fresh drinking water, agriculture, and even recreation."
"What is the water cycle?"
"It is the process by which water is moved and changed throughout the planet." his father replied as he sketched a rough drawing of a body of water, mountain range, and land. In the corner, he drew a large ball. "This is the sun; it gives off energy that heats the water from oceans, lakes, and anywhere else it's stored on the earth. As the water warms, it evaporates and then comes together again or condenses." He penciled out a dark fluffy cloud above the ocean and another over the land.
"I hate clouds!" Martin scowled.
